How Rogers Should Have Marketed the iPhone
It is with a certain amount of cynicism that the geek hordes sized up Rogers‘ newly unveiled teaser campaign for the forthcoming iPhone 3G. Nothing like a teaser for a product that was just announced to the world at the Apple WWDC on Tuesday.
How tragic. True, Rogers is being handed an effective monopoly (i.e. more than usual) for the world’s hottest mobile device, and has even announced what’s going to be released. But that’s no reason to half-ass the marketing. Jobs must be having an aneurysm.
This is what they should have done instead:
Amateurs.
Heya: how about you post your excellent ad to AdHack? We’d love to have it and taunt Rogers with better execution.
The only way your excellent ad could have be any better would be to use the word “Fracking” instead of “Freaking.” Let your true BSG-enhanced freak flag fly!
LOL. Black Jesusphone
Good one 😉
Sadder still is that the “learn more” button links to a arbitrary list of press releases.
Fail.
What boggles the mind, is that there is absolutely nothing on the fido site. I.e. the brand that’s supposed to put a cool face on a lame carrier that hasn’t (traditionally) given a shit about your avg consumer.
I think I’ll keep my HTC Touch, and 30/mo unlimited data plan from Telus.
I have a feeling that July 11 is going to be very amusing 😉
@James: Will do. I’m going to take Rev. Dan’s advice and change the “freaking” to “fracking” and let my BSG freak flag (frack flag?) fly – my wife, the professional copywriter, had suggested the same thing. Silly me for not listening.
I hope the real question to come out of this becomes: how will Tony Lacavera market the iPhone in Canada?
Roger’s choice on marketing the iPhone is amazing – I can’t believe that they’d think for a second that anyone who would be remotely interested in getting one doesn’t already know that Rogers will have it on July 11th.
Why are they doing this? I have a bad feeling about this – I think they are using the teaser-type of marketing because they *don’t* want anyone to see what the plans will be like until the iPhone is available and the crush to get one is at it’s peak. I’ve seen estimates around $90/mth, but what if it’s much higher, and people sign up for say $120/mth, locked into a 3-year contract?
